What Counts as an Emergency
If you're not sure, call. These are the ones we want to hear about right away:
- No heat when it's cold out, especially with small kids or older relatives in the house, or pipes at risk of freezing
- A boiler that's locked out or a furnace that won't stay lit
- No AC during a heat wave, especially for anyone in the house who doesn't handle heat well
- A burst pipe, a frozen pipe, or any leak, from a dripping ceiling to water on the basement floor
- A water heater that's failed or leaking, or no hot water at all
- A well pump that quit and left the taps dry
- A burning, electrical, or oil smell from your heating system, or any smell that worries you
- A gas smell: leave the house first and call your gas utility or 911 from outside, then call us
- A carbon monoxide alarm, once everyone's out of the house and you've called 911
A furnace that's noisy but still heating can usually wait for a regular heating repair appointment. The same goes for an air conditioner that runs but struggles on hot afternoons. Either way, we'll tell you straight whether yours can wait.
What to Do Before We Get There
Burst pipe or a big leak. Shut off the main water valve. It's usually where the water line comes into the basement or crawlspace, by the meter on town water or by the pressure tank on a well. Stay clear of water that's near outlets or the electrical panel. Once the water's off, we'll handle the plumbing repair.
Carbon monoxide alarm. Get everyone out of the house, pets included, and call 911 or the fire department from outside. Don't go back in until they say it's safe. Then call us to find the source.
No heat. Check the thermostat and make sure the system's power switch is on. Keep doors and windows shut, and open the cabinets under sinks on outside walls so warm air can reach the pipes.
Frozen pipe. Open the faucet that pipe feeds so water can move once it thaws, and warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer. Never use a torch or any open flame.
Leaking water heater. Close the cold water valve on top of the tank, then shut off its power or turn its gas control to off.
Smell gas? Leave the house first, and don't flip any switches on the way out. Call your gas utility or 911 from outside, then call us.
Emergency Service Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as an HVAC or plumbing emergency?
Anything that leaves your home without heat in the cold, without cooling in dangerous heat, without water or hot water, or with water where it shouldn't be. If you're on the fence, call (914) 299-5977 and we'll help you decide whether it can wait until morning.
What's the first thing to do if a pipe bursts?
Shut off the main water valve, then call us. It's worth finding that valve now, before you ever need it, and showing everyone in the house where it is.
What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?
Get everyone outside right away and call 911 or the fire department from there. After they've cleared the house, call us and we'll track down what caused it. Don't run the heating system again until it's been checked.
Do you work on weekends and holidays?
Yes. We're open 24/7, which covers Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and the middle of the night.
My furnace or boiler won't restart. What should I do?
Make sure the thermostat's calling for heat and the power switch is on, then press the reset button once. If it still won't run, stop there and call: pressing reset again and again can make things worse, especially on an oil burner. Our boiler service page explains lockouts in more detail.
Call Now
Don't sit in a cold house, or a flooded basement, wondering whether it's worth a call. Call (914) 299-5977 any hour, any day, and we'll take it from there.
For problems that aren't urgent, like an AC repair that can wait a day or a tune-up, use the form and we'll get back to you.
